October 17 deadline to recharacterize Roth IRA conversions

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Recent market declines may have created a tax planning opportunity when it comes to recharacterizing Roth IRA conversions executed in 2010. In recent weeks, many investors have moved from equities to assets that traditionally have been considered less risky, such as U.S. Treasuries. This “flight to safety” has seen equity values decline and may have created a recharacterization opportunity for you.

The value of the assets converted last year from your traditional IRA to your Roth IRA may have fallen along with the stock market, so you may want to consider unwinding your Roth IRA conversion. Converting back to a traditional IRA can eliminate the income tax due on the amount originally converted. And you still have until October 17 to undo the original conversion. What’s more, if you’ve already filed your taxes, you’ll receive a full refund on the income tax paid on the conversion.

Recharacterization impacts both your income-tax planning as well as your overall financial planning. A Roth IRA may still be a viable investment strategy for your long-term plans. Even if you undo an earlier conversion, you can later reconvert your assets – hopefully while asset values are still low – back into a Roth IRA, when it makes the most sense for you.

While there can be a lot of benefits, the rules surrounding recharacterization and reconversion are quite complex and require careful forethought.

Thank you for your support of Tough Enough To Wear Pink

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

By Sandy Hunter, Administrative/Marketing Assistant

Finale: fi?nal?e (noun)   A climactic event in a series   Tonight, July 20th , is certainly that for our office as our many months of effort with Tough Enough To Wear Pink comes to an incredible finish.

Our Tough Enough To Wear Pink journey has been fantastic! From obtaining sponsors, walking the Kaysville parade, Family Fun Day at This Is The Place Monument Park, to the many trips to the printer we have loved every minute of it! It has been incredibly rewarding to see the fruits of our labors ripen as you, our sponsors, and the community rallied together against this disease that is so personal for all of us.

This year we were able to donate $6,000 to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.  Your support is most sincerely appreciated. And not just by us! The Huntsman Cancer Foundation appreciates your faith in them as well, but even more importantly, those who stand as supportive shoulders for one fighting, those who are fighting for their own life…they thank you even more than we can. It is honorable to help save the life of a loved one, but to give of yourself, to sacrifice to save the life of a stranger now that…that is what they call noble.

As I sit on the edge of my seat watching bulls, horses, and cowboys go whirling past I am taken back for in my panoramic view pink, pink, more pink bandanas! Thousands of strangers sporting their freshly purchased Tough Enough To Wear Pink bandana. Many didn’t ask where their money is being spent, they just wanted join in the theme. Others took an interest after asking if they were free and we told them they were a dollar donation to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation! But as I pan I wonder if they really know what they have done!  Every penny of every dollar donated goes directly to breast cancer research and will help with things such as buying tools needed to test new treatment options, research how to improve treatments, research and understand what is causing this mutation of cells, and perhaps even help put fresh flowers on the counter so patients putting their trust in these innovative treatments can slowly wander by and stop to smell the roses, as it were, and be reminded they are still surrounded by life!

Commencement: com? mence ?ment (noun)  the beginning of something    May I adapt it read: the beginning of something incredible! This is truly just the beginning for us and our love of Tough Enough To Wear Pink! We are already gearing up for next year! So you can plan on seeing us on the steps of the rodeo Tuesday night dawning our Tough Enough To Wear Pink bandanas and fighting for a cure! We hope you are standing next to us!
