Marv Sr found out he had prostate cancer at the end of July just after we had completed our Tough Enough to Wear Pink Days of 47 campaign. They caught it early and had his prostate removed on the 18th of October robotically. The surgery went extremely well; they are confident they got all the cancer and he has recovered quickly. And although the rest of us thought it was too early, he was back in the office within days! He often expresses how much better he feels than before the surgery.
LaRene, his wife, is doing very well with her cancer. She was diagnosed in November 2008 with an aggressive form of breast cancer. The cancer is now only in her liver and bones and is steadily going down. She has been on an international study medication that is successfully working. Other than going in for an infusion of drugs every 3 weeks, life is back to normal.
Marv Jr has been busy running the office in Marv Sr’s absence. A lot of what he does is behind the scenes. His wife Jolyn has been finishing up Physical Therapy Assistant schooling and graduates in December. She has received 4 job offers, which is amazing in this economy. Marv Jr has had to be Mom and Dad in the last year to lift the burdens of Jolyn’s grueling pace of study and internship work. He has gotten good at making home lunches for his three children, but still can’t get the girls hair done right. He leaves that to them.
Melissa spent the last two months out on maternity leave. She and her husband welcomed a little girl named Taylor Jayne into their family. She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz and was 20 inches long. She has been such a joy and happy baby. She is already smiling at everyone and sleeping through the night. Her son Logan also just turned 3 and loves having a baby sister. She is now back at work working just two days in the office and some more hours from home.
Sandy has enjoyed doing new things in the office as she fills in for Melissa while she is on maternity leave and while Marv Sr. was out. She is thrilled to be dancing with her fiancé Chris in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert! She also enjoyed getting to share this amazing experience with one of our 401(k) clients, Boyd Fisher, from Hogan Construction. He sings in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and is truly one of the nicest people she has ever met. According to Sandy, the music that night truly touched the soul. She will never forget standing back stage under the enormous pipe organ and feeling the rumble of the male voices trumpeting the carol of their King. It was incredible. Thank you Boyd!
